The school garden at Mbollet-Ba has been pressed in to service to develop a new technique of growing plants with much less water use. The children installed the system, with help from Salusbury, in February. On just 3 litres of water a day they have grown dozens of onions and aubergines. The technique involves putting a leaky hosepipe 30cm underground, and feeding it from two old water bottles made into reservoirs. This keeps the roots moist deep below the scorched sandy top layer of soil.
